Facial Spider Veins

Small, thin superficial veins (capillaries) that lie close to the surface of the skin are referred to as spider veins when dilated and visibly abnormal. On the face, spider veins are most commonly found on the nose, cheek, and/or chin, and often occur with Rosacea. Spider veins can indicate problems with deeper veins (reticular or feeder veins).

Symptoms

The appearance of the pronounced spider-like, branch-like, or linear pattern is the most obvious and certain indication of spider veins (medically, telangiectasias). Discomfort, itching, and burning are the most common symptoms.

Causes and factors:

A family history of spider veins is the strongest indicator of a tendency towards spider veins. Hormonal factors, including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, the use of birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy, estrogen, and progesterone influence the onset of spider veins. Increased hormone levels and blood volume during pregnancy often contribute to the development of spider veins during the first trimester. The enlarged uterus also causes increased pressure on the veins. With successive pregnancies, abnormal veins are more likely to remain.

At The Vein Institute of Toronto, we look at your entire venous history and condition. If we treat a superficial vein problem without diagnosing and treating the deeper conditions, there is a distinct possibility that the spider veins will reoccur within a short period of time.

Today, we treat facial spider veins using sophisticated laser equipment with the smallest focal point available for precise application. We also use a cooling device at the same time as the laser to protect and to cool the skin. This method allows us to use the full power of the laser to increase the results during each session and so reduce the number of treatments required. Our methods involve very little discomfort, and have a very high success rate. We are the first clinic in Canada to use the cooling system that permits the most effective laser treatment of spider veins.
